How To Find The Specific Location And Fault Of Underground Dog Fence

Introduction to the underground dog or pet fence wire locator.

By 1970s, the oldest brands of underground dog fence wire locator started, sometimes it is known as electronic pet containment system.

Genetic information from 35,000-year-old wolf bones found under a frozen rock in Siberia is the oldest evidence of the ancient relationship between humans and dogs.

Actually it is not a literally fence, but it is an appealing alternative for the common dog fences, less expensive, easy to build and less materials used of course.

As the electronic pet fence has no physical effect on the pet itself, it is not considered as a punishment to it in case of crossing the fence borders, but it is just a correction deterrent to it.

The main reasons that leads to break the underground wire pet fence.

The underground wires is commonly buried in the house garden, so there will be many scenarios for this wires cut.

  • Using the garden tools like Lawn mower or hand tools like shovel.
  • If Rodents found the cable they will chew into the plastic casing.
  • If a part of the wire is exposed to the sun, this may leads to its plastic cover erosion with time.
  • The moisture of the soil can infiltrate and corrode the metal part of the wire.
  • You may decide to install a new cables or wires underground the garden like sprinkler system or outdoor lightening, in this case you may cut the fence wire by error.
  • Lightning Strikes with its high voltage may damage the wire even if it is underground with many inches.
  • Using soil fertilizers is known as a source of a higher soil conductivity, so it will leads to a faster corrosion in the wires in general.

Parts of the underground wire pet fence:

The main essential underground wire pet fence are composed of transmitter, underground wire, and receiver.

The transmitter is a box containing an electronic board, this device is responsible to generating a wave that will flow inside the underground wire when you connect it to the output ports of the box.

The difference between a transmitter and another, is mainly the distance range can be covered, and some control options.

It should be hanged near an electrical supply outlet to power it.

At a next step, you will connect a twisted double wire to the box outlet, this twisted wire will be buried underground your garden.

It is called the collar hanged sensor, which is a small device you will hang in your pet collar, and if you have more than one pet, you will need to buy additional receiver and collar for each one.

The receiver has (in most common brands) a 6 V battery to power it, and it is usually replaced after some months of work.

Note that your pet won’t go out of the area covered by the underground wire fence (of course after training it), but other pets can enter this area, as they won’t sense the radio wave existence.

The receiver will sense the magnetic wave generated around each single underground wire, when the dog gets close to the buried wire (not at the twisted wires area), then a correction trigger will run, so the dog will know that it is near the boundary and should go back.

Underground wire:

Under the transmitter box there will be a two connection for two cables, each is a single cable, one of them is the wave way out of the box, and the other one is the back way of that wave.

Note that twisting the two cables together at any place around your garden will cancel the wave and stop your pet correction job of the fence, and this note is useful for some applications, such as if you need to add another boundary for your pet to avoid, like a swimming pool or a flower area.

This wire should be buried under ground for about 2 inches, to avoid the lawn mower and someone tripping over it.

The wire converts the waves generated from the transmitter into a magnetic wave around it, where the receiver will sense it, when the dog gets close to the safe area borders.

The correction action.

The correction action of the receiver is completely not harmful for the pet, as it ranges from a warning beep to a faster beep rate to just remember the dog about the training instructions.

And if the pet did not come back to the safe area, the receiver will emit a static electricity weak shock, or an annoying spicy smell (some brand’s options).

Note that, the job of the underground pet fence is basically based on the first time training you will offer to your pet, to learn it about the safe area for it. Without this learning, all the system will has no use at all.

Some brands of underground pet fence come with learning small flags for the pet learning process, and after it is learned you can remove these flags from the garden floor.

How to find and trace an invisible dog or pet fence wire, and locate a break in the tracked wire.

The transmitter part of the underground pet fence in most brands is provided with a led which will be on, as the wires is connected to the transmitter and the wire loop is complete. If any cut or failure happened to any one of the two cables, this led will go off.

But to locate the exact position of the failure, you will need a device called (underground wire locator) which is able to find the exact location of the wire break.

The principle of the wire locator is so similar to the underground fence principle, so it is composed of (Transmitter, Receiver, and the wire is your own fence wire).

Steps to trace the underground dog fence wire locator.

Note: Through these steps, take care of the difference between the underground wire fence transmitter (fence transmitter), and the wire locator transmitter (locator transmitter).

  • Disconnect the two cables of the underground pet fence from the fence transmitter box.
  • Connect these two wires to the clamps of the locator transmitter.
  • Power on the locator transmitter and receiver, to start the wire tracking process.
  • Follow the twisted wire track and usually notice the sound tone of the receiver, which indicates that the wire are not broken.
  • If there is a noticeable decrease or stop of the tone, this indicates a break in the wire, you must fix it before the next check of the rest of the cable loop.
  • In certain place in the garden you will find that the twisted wire is released into two single wires, select a single direction to follow.
  • Notice any noticeable change or stop in the tone, this indicates a break in this single wire, you have to reconnect it before continuing.
  • If there are many break positions in the wire, it is recommended to replace a long part of the wire with a continuous new part, better than doing many splices in it.
  • Finally, disconnect the twisted wire two ends from the locator transmitter and fit them back in the fence transmitter, to test your system using the collar of your bet in your hand, before putting it on your lovely pet neck.

Recommended underground wire dog fence locator.

One of the most powerful wire locator is the locator of type (NF-816L), This underground wire locator is designed to effectively track underground pet fence wires, low voltage cables used for garden and landscape automatic watering systems, and low voltage garden lighting systems.

This type of underground wire locator can be used for Underground Heating detection to locate any failure in its metal pipes.

Advantages of (NF-816L) wire locator

It is used for tracking buried wire fence, irrigation wires, and garden lighting cables, for detecting any breaks in it, it is also used for sound & computer wires.

Trace and locate underground wires or in-wall wires with a detection depth range up to 60 cm and Cable length up to 800 m.

It is equipped with a pair of 3.5 mm earphones that can be connected to the receiver earphone jack to provide easy use in a noisy environment.

The receiver has a white LED Flashlight for auxiliary lighting in the darkness.

The transmitter and receiver are both powered by the 3.7 V rechargeable lithium battery, both with low battery indicator.
