Gestational Diabetes: Types, Risk Factors, Causes, Symptoms & Diet

Diabetes is one of the highest-ranking lifestyle disorders in the world currently. Closely followed by high blood pressure or hypertension as it is medically termed and obesity. Diabetes can be a manageable disorder when effectively taken care of but can prove fatal if not given proper care.

In India, around 65% of adults above the age of 50 years are diagnosed with high blood sugar and are diabetic. But there are many kinds of western and ayurvedic medicine for diabetes that can not only help in controlling and managing the disorder but some ayurvedic herbs can even heal the patient when used in the primary stages.

What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is a class of diabetes that is contracted by women when they are pregnant. Gestational diabetes is only termed so for those who have contracted this disorder after getting pregnant.

This disorder can be easily managed with diet and exercise for most women but for some women, based on their sugar and glucose tolerance level, might be low on insulin or other glucose management medication.

Glucose is one of the main by-products that is released by the stomach when we digest food. Glucose is usually found in carbohydrate-enriched foods such as rice, wheat, sugar, and many other kinds of food groups.

This glucose is metabolized by an important hormone called Insulin which is released by the pancreas as a response to manage the blood sugar levels in the body post-consumption of food. When the glucose released is not effectively managed by the insulin created by the pancreas, it leads to Diabetes in normal human beings.

In the case of pregnant women, the placenta may release some hormones that build up the excess glucose in the body and deter them from being metabolized. This excess sugar is then found in the blood and is not effectively consumed by the body.

In such a scenario, a pregnant woman may have higher blood sugar levels which need to be detected and effectively managed as it may cause some risk factors for the mother and the unborn fetus.

Symptoms of Gestational diabetes

There are some tell-tale signs to detect gestational diabetes during pregnancy but the most reliable of all is to get a GTT or a GCT test done between the 24th and 28th week of pregnancy so that the doctor can establish the blood sugar levels and catch the disorder early on.

Some signs of diabetes in pregnant women are mentioned below:

  • Excessive Thirst
  • Excessive Fatigue
  • Urge to eat more
  • Urge to pee more often than usual

The best way to determine if a patient does or does not have gestational diabetes is by taking a glucose screening test. Once the test confirms that the patient does have higher than normal blood sugar levels, medicines and diet can be implemented to effectively manage the disease.

Managing Gestational Diabetes

With a good diet, exercise, and simple lifestyle changes, one can easily control gestational diabetes and manage the blood sugar levels in the body. Drugs, Insulin injections, and Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes have been proven helpful in keeping the blood sugar levels low and help in effectively managing the blood sugar levels in the body.

A diet filled with complex carbs, protein, fats, and lots of vegetables and fruits can help in mitigating this disorder. High fiber diets with no artificial sugar and less refined carbs can also do the trick.
