We consider our Aluminum Windows package to be a crucial part of our residential construction kit. They cost more than vinyl windows (minus one thumb), but they’re cheaper than wood or steel. For these reasons and more, we have relied on Marlin’s 1505 series AT-17 fixed, casement, and awning windows for many years. Aluminum Windows
The number of vertical and horizontal breaks in a window’s panes makes it less energy efficient because (1) the panes themselves are more efficient than the aluminium frames in terms of heat retention. We estimate that the frame’s longevity, low maintenance, and pristine appearance more than compensate for any potential energy loss.
The use of double and triple pane windows is recommended for code compliance (at least in Washington State, where the code is rigorous). As mentioned in the first item, we typically install triple-paned windows in the operable windows, as this is where the thermal bridge caused by the aluminium frame is the most noticeable. Remember that there is a slight tint difference between double and triple pane windows, and that double pane windows are typically clearer, and use triple panes sparingly.
Third, install a kerf wood liner before sheetrock to hide any imperfections in the framing around windows and allow the eye to travel freely across the surface of the wall.
Even thermally broken aluminium frames expand and contract differently depending on the relative humidity and temperature, so make sure to leave a sizable 1/16″ gap between the wood liner and the frame. Instead of caulk, which can crack or discolour over time, we prefer the intentional line or gap as it requires no upkeep.
- Make sure the exterior is aligned properly. Back Doors headers, feature lines, siding breaks, and the resulting lines after flashing and siding offsets are applied are all examples of features that must be carefully measured and planned for. Look for misalignments or broken mullions on the inside as closely, if not more closely. Make sure that no mullions are obstructing your line of sight, and check this by standing in front of the window (standing at the sink, seated on the sofa, etc.).
Windows with awnings
Whenever possible, make use of windows with awnings (hinge at the top, opening at the bottom). We can expect rain on a regular basis in the Pacific Northwest, but that doesn’t stop people from leaving their awnings open a crack.
Seven, if you want screens but your windows open, use roto-style hardware. We’re all for push-out windows, but the doggie door access is awful once screens are installed on the interior side. In most cases, just having the roto handle makes things easier.
For a more streamlined and contemporary look, try aligning the bottom of the windows with the top of the interior base. This is a fantastic method to furnish wall-to-wall windows while keeping the interior design uniform.
The glazing in the window frames will have to be installed on-site if the windows get too big. Marlin requires on-site assembly for orders greater than 40 square feet for triple pane and 50 square feet for double pane. We can attribute this to the fact that it is lightweight and easy to handle. The cost of on-site glazing may be higher than expected, but it is justified when large panes of glass are installed to let in natural light and enhance the view.
