There aren’t many customers who are ready to invest in a $1,000 price for earphones. Nevertheless, if you are reading this, you are one of those who may, or is at least fascinated. So does the high price equate to a pleasurable listening experience?
The answer to that is yes when you are talking about Shure SE846. Since most earphones available in this price bracket are customised ear-moulded pairs, the SE846 can compete with the powerhouses like Ultimate Ears and JH Audio.
One of a kind design
From its high quality, detachable Kevlar-reinforced cords (one is 46 and the other one is 64 inches long) in addition to nozzles that vary the sound characteristic gradually to the user’s choice, it is not an earphone lacking in excellent quality and intelligent accessories.
The cords, enclosed in the transparent coating, disconnect at the earpieces, both of which are made of clear plastic, allowing you to proudly display the four armature speakers in each of your ears. The nine sets of ear tips that come with this SE846 are available in various sizes, materials, and shapes, ranging from comfy cushions to silicone. Furthermore, detaching the ear tips gives you access to its convertible nozzles, which allow you to tune the frequency range to make it brighter. The SE846 comes with a balanced, neutral pair of nozzles as default.
Moreover, Shure adds an inline audio adapter, which attaches at the end of the cord and to any 3.5mm jack, a 1/4-inch jack adapter headphone, an adapter airline jack, a shirt pin, a cleaning wipe, a tiny zip-up bag, and the huge, transparent plastic hard-sided case. Interestingly, neither of the wires offered features an incorporated microphone for smartphones or remote controls.
The performance
The Shure SE846 is a designed subwoofer on tracks with something like sub-bass content, and that is because it has. Its lows are realistic, not exaggerated or artificially increased. What you hear is a strong, deep bass sound that is well balanced with the whole of the spectrum. There is no distortion at the highest, most dangerous listening settings.
With the boost nozzle in, you get the terrific bass presence in vocals and drumming, the guitar playing draws more from the limelight, and the drumming beats have a little more zing in their strike. With the reduction of the treble filter in place, the percussion has a pretty brilliant impact. People’s favourite nozzles were neutral, which appeared to provide just the appropriate balance of intensity.
Its sub-bass synths blasts that accentuate the drum cycle on Kanye West and Jay-Z’s “No Church in the Wild” are presented with the full ferocity of its lowest frequencies, though not in a way that overpowers the entirety of the sound. The onslaught of the foot drum cycle remains the most aggressive sound in this mix. It has a lot of edges when delivered through a normal nozzle; when sent through the boosted treble nozzle, it slashes through the centre of the blend, same as the vocals.
