Finally, this entrepreneur decided to turn his model railroading hobby into a business and built a nearly full-size replica steam railroad to completely encircle his new amusement park, which he named Disneyland after himself. One of the main reasons for Disney’s success is that he meticulously planned out everything about Disneyland for years in advance.
George Selios is another model railroader who has turned his pastime into a company. I came to know George through his excellent model railroad. I’ve also seen him at model railroad exhibitions, where he’s seated at his display booth selling his wares.
Several of the nicest buildings on my model train were built using George’s kits. George founded Fine Scale Miniatures some decades ago, producing very well-crafted, highly detailed model kits of antique New England buildings in HO scale (1:87) for model train enthusiasts.
Every year, George would spend 6 months meticulously planning one fantastic new building kit. Then he spent the following six months of each year developing one of the world’s most beautiful model railroads. In different ways, several model railroaders have turned their passion into a company. Some of them buy and sell secondhand model trains. Others construct model railroads for those who do not wish to construct their own.
